Earlier this year, the long-running ABC drama "Grey's Anatomy" made headlines for having its first openly gay male surgeon — Nico Kim, played by actor Alex Landi. But the series is making a splash again this week after another character on the show came out as gay, as did the actor who plays him.

In the Thursday night episode "Flowers Grow Out of My Grave," Dr. Kim and Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) share a passionate kiss after weeks of flirtation. Dr. Schmitt admits that it's the first time he's kissed another man and gives a moving speech.

But things got a bit meta when Borelli, 27, took to social media to publicly come out as gay. On Instagram wrote, the actor wrote, "As a gay guy myself, tonight's episode was so special to me. This is exactly the kind of story I craved as a young gay kid growing up in Ohio, and it blows my mind that I'm able to bring life to Dr. Levi Schmitt as he begins to grapple with his own sexuality this season on Grey's Anatomy."

He went on to say: "His vulnerability and courage inspire me every day, and I hope he can do the same for you. To all of you who feel like little Levis out there, know that I do too, that you are seen, and that we're all in this together. And to everyone who has supported me over the years, I can't thank you enough, and I love you more than all the stars..."

Borelli also spoke about his decision to come out as gay with an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He explained he has been out to friends and family for nearly a decade but still called his parents to help him come out to his fans.

"My dad said, 'When you have a truth about yourself and you finally have the courage to speak up and share that truth, a weight gets lifted,'" Borelli told EW. "I knew in that moment this is the right thing to do. This is bigger than me."

He said playing an openly gay doctor is something he dreamed of when he first started his acting career.

"I get a chance to act in a storyline I would have craved when I was younger," he said. "I feel so connected to the character, and I'm super excited to go into work every day and bring this storyline to life."
