Overlord

I said it last November, and I'll say it again here: "Overlord" is fucking fantastic!

While it might seem like just a loud, run-of-the-mill zombie movie that happens to take place during WWII, this is anything but standard horror movie fare. The film by Julius Avery ("Son of a Gun") is one of the best movies of the last year in terms of production, thrills, cast, and overall surprise.

Every minute of this spectacle is something you are completely invested in and enthralled with. Even more so, "Overlord" is a technical achievement. From the white-knuckle opening sequence aboard the plane to the single-shot finale, the movie wows on so many levels. The production design is superb, and the special effects are a grisly marvel. When one character becomes a victim of a particular experiment in front of the soldiers, the scene plays out brilliantly, utilizing a bit of gasping comedy with some truly horrific choreography. It's one of the best, most shocking scenes of the film.

I urge you to just go and enjoy the ride. This is a fantastic film for movie lovers, war-film fanatics, horror enthusiasts, and action seekers alike.

The only Special Feature (there's not even a trailer) is a 50 minute collection of mini-docs regarding the making of the film covering the set design, special effects, casting, and directing. It's a nifty look at the production, although commentary, deleted scenes, or marketing would have been a nice touch. The Blu-ray combo pack includes the DVD and a Digital copy as well.

Regardless, the film alone is worth the purchase. Watch it on the biggest screen possible with the best sound system you can find and then enjoy the crap out of it!
