Celebrate International Day Against Homophobia 2013

On May 17, LGBT rights activists and supporters will celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia in order to raise awareness on LGBT rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBT rights work. The Paris-based "IDAHOBIT Committee" founded the event and aims to create events around the world.

IDAHOBIT is celebrated on May 17 because it was the same day in 1990 when homosexuality was removed from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization.

The theme for IDAHBT Day 2013 is "Fight the Homophobia Web Virus."

"The campaign image shows a virus seen under microscope. This homophobia Web virus, of course, has no face or color. Its illustration is an element of communication," the event's official homepage reads. "Homophobia is becoming increasingly present on the Web and in social media. The anonymity of the Internet facilitates the spread of abusive comments and cyber homophobia that could have serious consequences."

The website points out ways LGBT people can file complaints and protect themselves from anti-gay harassment, especially when it comes to homophobia on the web.

To participate in the worldwide event, supporters can "use the campaign's promotional Web material and share it on Facebook, Twitter, blogs and in emails, set an example by making your Facebook page or website a homophobia-free zone, create a Facebook page, video or blog dedicated to the fight against homophobia and create your own campaign for the fight against homophobia." The site also urges people to pass along posters and brochures around the workplace or at school. Additionally, supporters can organize activities, discussion and invite public figures to speak out against anti-gay activity.

Last year, Liverpool, England, became the first city in the world to create, participate and engage in IDAHOBIT.
