On Sunday January 13, long-time South End and LGBT institution Fritz Bar will close for renovations. Fritz, at the corner of Berkeley and Chandler Street opened in 1983 just as the South End was becoming a neighborhood known for its large gay population.

Clifford Long, one of the owners of the property, announced that extensive renovations will begin to turn Fritz into The Trophy Room.

"Our core is still our core. We will continue to sponsor gay sports teams-14 at last count-continue to host the Gay Pride Block Party."

Long acknowledges that Fritz "made that corner of Berkeley and Chandler Street a destination to a whole community."

"I want to thank our amazing staff, whose dedication and genuine heartfelt belief in community made," Long said. "Fritz was such a success. Thank you to our loyal customers and great neighbors who are and will always be part of the Fritz family."

The Trophy Room is projected to open in the spring as a contemporary American pub. Sports and neighborhood will remain central themes in the new restaurant. The venue's kitchen will be increased in size and the interior will be completely redesigned.
