Nasty Pig leans into the hotness with a new campaign, "Real Nasty Pigs of New York," that focuses on bringing its subversive styles to 10 queer icons from the Big Apple.
"The provocative yet polished photo series is a celebration of queer culture, self-expression and the kind of sexual positivity that makes pearl-clutchers clutch harder," Us Magazine reported.
The famed brand was launched in New York City in 1994 by life partners David Lauterstein and Frederick Kearney. Since then, with its physique-flattering cuts, reinvention of erotically charged athletic apparel, and nods to fetish wear, the brand has come to define a certain "gay" look that everyday customers and celebrities like out gay singer Frank Ocean have taken to.
The "Real Nasty Pigs of New York" campaign's collection of images features Billy Porter in a harness and Alan Cumming in a leather jacket and jockstrap, as well as "longtime Paper Magazine editor-in-chief Mickey Boardman, quintessential downtown It girl Linux and freestyle musician-slash-model Yves Mathieu" in various looks, the publication noted.
The images are paired with "candid interviews," Us relayed, with quotes from the queer celebs being included in the company's Instagram posts devoted to the "Real Nasty Pigs" campaign.
"The positivity of sex and the education of sex can only allow us to lead healthier and longer lives," reads the caption at one post showing Yves.
Lauterstein said in a release that the company was "very surprised at how many celebrities were actually Nasty Pig fans." But Billy Porter was upfront about what attracts him to the brand's styles.
"Nasty Pig was the first brand that had all different kinds of people," the caption at one of the Insta posts featuring Porter reads. "This brand makes me feel sexy when I put it on. I felt seen."
Another post featured a video clip of Porter's interview with the brand.
"My name is Billy Porter," the Tony Award and Emmy winning singer, actor, and producer declares in the clip. "I am... fabulous!"
Porter says that Nasty Pig gear has been a longtime personal favorite. "It was the first harness I bought. [It] was the first jockstrap. There's a sex-positive energy that comes with the founders and the brand."
Photographer and fashion stylist Airik Prince related his own thoughts, saying, "Nasty Pig makes a lot of cool clothes – you just have to know how to wear it," and adding that, "You all have completely taken over my wardrobe."
Mickey Boardman – who in addition to his work at Paper Magazine is also with Playgirl – poked some fun, declaring in his interview, "It takes some nerve to call your brand Nasty Pig, because some people – you'd be shocked to find out – do not enjoy an insinuation that men are having sex with each other."
Boardman recalled his first encounter with the brand, when he saw a good looking man at a club wearing some striking fashion. "Oh, it's by these people, and they're over there," Boardman was told. "So I went over to them and said, 'I work at Paper Magazine,' and that was their first piece of press," Boardman recounted. "What it was then is exactly what it is now, which is what I love about the brand."
Added Boardman: "They're not just about sex. They're about fabulous clothes for hot men."
